Inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead skull art, this piece recreates a skull from 6 different types of handmade butterflies.

The picture is named after the artist Diego Rivera, whose artwork ‘Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Park’ (inspired by Posada’s earlier version) prominently features a depiction of a skeletal female named La Calavera Catrina. La Catrina has now become an iconic character that inspires the Day of the Dead celebrations. ‘La Catrina’ is the name of the twin artwork in this series.

Over 85 individually crafted butterflies were used in this piece to achieve the abundance and density for a thick pop of colour. Monarchs, Blue Morphos, Common Blues and Bath Whites, each butterfly folded, edges inked, antennae folded and fixed in position and then all individually pinned into place. All butterflies are printed on a mix of reflective and light-sensitive papers, giving the artwork a glistening, playful quality.

A crop of reflective discs in complementary colours was also added to the work, acting as another layer of decoration, highlighting contours and playing with light.

Finished frame size:  54cm x 54cm x 7.5cm – Matt black
