Behind Blue Eyes works on two levels – the radial composition captures both The Who’s iconic Mod target symbol of the era and the song ‘Behind Blue Eyes’. The two bands of colour conveying the songs emotional meaning of the need to hide your true feelings behind ones appearance – their “blue eyes”— to mask their often vulnerable, sometimes treacherous nature. It highlights the struggle to hide pain and the fear of losing control.
The outer circle of blue describes a “blue” exterior—representing beauty, calm, or innocence. The inner circle of red a metaphor for concealing mixed inner feelings of darker reality of frustration and sadness. A song originally written by Pete Townsend for a character in a musical meant to be produced after the success of Pinball Wizard.
